SVM Monthly Newsletter – June-July 2026

Dear Friends,

The past few months have been marked by meaningful progress, inspiring collaborations, and new opportunities to create lasting impact across the communities we serve.

From engaging with the Indian diaspora during the International Day of Yoga celebrations in California to advancing innovative solutions like Air to Water technology in Meghalaya, we continue to witness how partnerships, innovation, and community participation can transform lives. This edition also highlights the visit of Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh to our NECTAR STEM Lab, giving students a memorable opportunity to engage with national leadership, along with hands-on technology exposure at NIT Meghalaya. We are also excited to share how our rural internship program is preparing the next generation of changemakers by connecting students with meaningful, on-the-ground development work.

Across every initiative, our commitment remains the same: empowering rural communities through education, healthcare, innovation, and sustainable livelihoods. These stories are a testament to the dedication of our partners, volunteers, donors, students, and community members who continue to make this journey possible.

Thank you for standing with us. Your continued support enables us to expand our reach, strengthen our impact, and build brighter futures for villages across India.

Warm regards,

SVM Team & Trustees

Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh Visits STEM Lab

On July 13, 2026, Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh visited the NECTAR STEM Lab in Shillong. He met with students at the lab. The NECTAR STEM Lab is a joint initiative by Smart Village Movement and the North East Centre for Technology Application and Reach (NECTAR). It gives students in Shillong hands-on access to STEM learning and mentorship, going beyond what a regular classroom offers.

During the visit, Dr. Singh interacted with students and asked them questions. For many students, it was a rare chance to meet a Union Minister in person, and it left a lasting impression.

The visit reflects well on the work being done at the Lab, and is a reminder of why STEM education for students matters.

Air to Water, Tested and Safe to Drink

For a state known for some of the highest rainfall on Earth, the idea of water running out feels hard to believe. Yet this year, Meghalaya is facing a 74 per cent rainfall deficit, one of the steepest shortfalls on record, according to IMD data. This is exactly the kind of problem the Air to Water machine was built to solve.

Three machines have been running since 2025, two in rural areas and one at the Health Complex in Shillong. The machines draw moisture from the air and turn it into drinking water.

Water from the Health Complex machine was recently lab tested by the State Pollution Board and confirmed safe to drink. It is a result that builds a clear, evidence backed case for bringing this technology to the rural and hilly villages that need it most.

With a tested and proven solution in hand, the focus now shifts to scale, bringing more Air to Water machines to water-scarce villages across Meghalaya.

Smart Village Movement Foundation at International Day of Yoga 2026

As part of the 12th International Day of Yoga celebrations organized by the Consulate General of India, Los Angeles, the Smart Village Movement US Foundation (SVM) hosted an outreach booth to raise awareness about its healthcare and education initiatives.

Student volunteers Sana Jatana (Orange County event) and Vihaan Gottam (Los Angeles) engaged with attendees throughout the morning, sharing information about SVM’s grassroots programs and answering questions from the community.

Events like these are a powerful reminder of how much community support matters in sustaining social impact work. As the Indian diaspora continues to grow across the U.S., spaces like International Day of Yoga offer a meaningful opportunity to connect people with causes back home — fostering awareness, encouraging civic participation, and empowering the next generation of volunteers to carry these initiatives forward.

We’re always looking to grow our network of partners and volunteers — especially students eager to gain hands-on experience while contributing to meaningful causes. If you’re interested in getting involved with SVM, reach out to learn more about upcoming opportunities. Contact@smartvillagement.org

A Day of Tech Exposure at NIT Meghalaya

Students from NECTAR STEM Lab, a joint initiative of Smart Village Movement and the North East Centre for Technology Application and Reach (NECTAR), took part in a technical workshop at NIT Meghalaya, hosted by the IEEE Student Branch Chapter.

The day covered drone technology, 5G networks, semiconductor design, and EMC testing through expert-led sessions and live demonstrations. Highlights included a hands-on drone flying session, a walkthrough of NIT Meghalaya’s 5G lab, a talk on semiconductor design by the Chairman of IEEE CASS Delhi Chapter, and a visit to the institute’s EMC test chamber, giving students hands-on exposure to the technologies shaping careers in electronics and telecom.

Rural Internships: The Epitome of Future Education in India

With over 4.33 crore students currently enrolled in higher education in India (AISHE 2021-22 ), times are changing. Internships are no longer optional credits. It is now mandatory to be part of every student’s curriculum, and the question is no longer whether students will intern, but where.

The National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020) has reshaped how the higher education system in India prepares students for their future. Under NEP 2020, every undergraduate student is encouraged to undertake meaningful, real-world experiential learning as part of their degree. This experience is in the form of internships which carry academic credits as per the student’s syllabus and curriculum. Read more….
