SVM Monthly Newsletter – June 2025

At Smart Village Movement (SVM), our mission is to bridge the urban-rural divide by delivering innovation, technology, and opportunity to the last mile. We are proud to share that nearly half a million rural residents in Meghalaya and Gujarat now have improved access to quality healthcare, education, livelihoods, and life-changing innovations.

From rural polyclinics and innovations like the Dream Warmer™, to Farmer Hubs and global leadership programs like Aspire, SVM is implementing scalable, sustainable solutions that uplift communities often overlooked.

With multiple initiatives active and scaling across sectors, we’re often asked: Why do we choose to take on so much? The answer is simple —true development must be holistic. Health, education, livelihoods, and entrepreneurship are deeply interdependent.

And we don’t do this alone.
Our work is powered by strong local partnerships, state government collaboration, innovative enterprises, and most importantly – donors and volunteers who have been our backbone.

This is just the beginning. We invite like-minded partners and institutions to join us in reimagining what’s possible.

Let’s co-create the future of India—because a developed rural India strengthens the foundation of the entire nation. When rural communities thrive, they unlock human potential, fuel inclusive  rowth, and contribute to India’s emergence as a future economic powerhouse —where every citizen enjoys the fruits of development, innovation, and technology.

With hope and action.

Innovation In a Wrap: Dream Warmer™ Pilot Launched in Meghalaya

In remote, hilly regions like Meghalaya, hypothermia remains a silent threat to the survival of newborns— especially those born prematurely or with low birth weight.

The Dream Warmer™ is a reusable, non-electric infant warmer designed to maintain a safe skin temperature for up to six hours without electricity.

On June 19, 2025, the Smart Village Movement, in collaboration with NHM Meghalaya and Global Newborn Solutions, launched a pioneering pilot in Mawkyrwat. With the guidance of trained ANMs and ASHAs, mothers are now using the warmers at home, ensuring their newborns stay warm, safe, and supported through Kangaroo Mother Care.

The first training was held at the DMHO Office, Mawkyrwat, led by child health experts and attended by district officials.

WHAT IS THE DREAM WARMER?

The Dream Warmer™ is a reusable, non-electric infant warmer developed by Dr. Anne Hansen, a neonatologist at Boston Children’s Hospital and Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School, in collaboration with innovators from UC Berkeley. It uses a phase-change material that stores heat when placed in hot water, keeping newborns at a safe skin temperature for up to 6 hours without electricity. Designed to support Kangaroo Mother Care, it offers a simple, life-saving solution for low resource, off-grid settings.

FROM PAIN TO PURPOSE

A 66-year-old mechanic from Mawryngkneng spent months visiting multiple clinics, seeking relief from severe, chronic knee pain that left him unable to work. With no diagnosis and growing despair, he feared he’d never return to his trade.

Everything changed when he visited a nearby Gramin polyclinic. There, he received accurate diagnostics, a personalized treatment plan, and consistent follow-ups—all under one roof. Over the next few weeks, his pain subsided, his strength returned, and with it, his ability to work and support his family.

“I am very happy that I can walk again confidently and go
back to work. Thank you, Gramin Healthcare!”

WHAT THE CLINICS OFFER

Each Gramin polyclinic delivers comprehensive, affordable primary care, including:

  • In-person and teleconsultations with qualified doctors
  • Point-of-care diagnostics (e.g., blood tests, ECG, blood pressure, eye screening)
  • Essential medicines at affordable prices
  • Health records and follow-ups via digital platforms
  • Health education & awareness sessions
  • Mobile health camps in the surrounding villages
  • Support for chronic disease management and elderly care

FARMERS’ HUB: Growing Prosperity in Sohiong & Krang

An SVM Intervention in Partnership with KhetiBatti Agro Pvt Ltd

In India’s Northeast, smallholder farmers face steep challenges—limited access to agri-inputs, poor market linkages, and inadequate infrastructure. In remote areas like Sohiong and Krang, even purchasing seeds often required long, costly journeys to Shillong.

To address these barriers, Smart Village Movement (SVM), in partnership with KhetiBatti Agro Pvt Ltd, launched the Farmer’s Hub in 2024.

An agri project facilitated and monitored by SVM, the Hub operates on a Hub-and-Spoke model, with the main center in the Sohiong Community and Rural Development Block (C&RD Block) and a spoke in Krang.

BRINGING INPUTS CLOSER TO FARMERS

The Hub now provides:

  • Seasonal vegetable seeds: cabbage, cauliflower, carrot, radish, beans, coriander, chilli
  • Agri-tools: knapsack sprayers, power weeders, and more
  • Easy local access—eliminating the need to travel to Shillong

More than 300 farmers have already benefited, and seed demand has tripled—from 1,000g/month in 2024 to 3,000g/month during the sowing season.

CONNECTING FARMERS TO MARKETS

To boost incomes, the Hub also aggregates local produce and transports up to 2 tons daily to the Brahmaputra Wholesale Market in Guwahati, helping farmers bypass middlemen and achieve better price realization.

Despite ongoing logistical hurdles, the Farmers’ Hub is proving to be a game-changer, enabling farmers to grow more, earn more, and thrive.

Aspire Leadership Program: Building Confidence, Shaping Futures

The Aspire Leadership Program is a free global leadership initiative for low-income, first-generation college students. It offers a rare opportunity to engage with peers from over 195 countries, access leadership courses by Harvard faculty, and participate in interactive masterclasses, professional workshops, and a robust alumni network offering mentorship and funding opportunities.

In Meghalaya, Smart Village Movement (SVM) has proudly facilitated this program with Aspire Institute and MPOWER ensuring rural and underserved students gain access to these transformative learning
experiences.

For students like Kmenhunlang Kharwar, a 22-year-old from Meghalaya, Aspire has been life-changing.

“I’ve gained confidence in expressing myself. It’s inspiring to meet students who are great speakers—but also others like me who are
still learning. The program constantly pushes me to grow.”

Bringing global opportunities to rural communities is vital for educational equity and leadership development. Programs like Aspire, supported by SVM, empower young changemakers to lead and uplift their societies.

“As young adults, the future of our communities lies with us. We must do something good for society,” Kmenhunlang reflects.
