SVM Monthly Newsletter – August 2025

At Smart Village Movement (SVM), we believe lasting change begins at the grassroots.

In East Garo Hills, the Foundational Learning Improvement Programme (FLIP) is transforming classrooms—teachers are using new training and materials to make learning engaging and effective, giving children the strong start they deserve.

In Shillong, STEM Fusion 2025 brought together over 400 students who showcased 95 projects tackling real-world challenges—from smart farming to AI. Hon’ble Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma attended, lauded the initiative, and awarded grants to winning projects, further encouraging STEM learning across the state.

The Dream Warmer™ initiative expanded to Jowai, where four kits were delivered to the Maternal and Child Health Hospital in West Jaintia Hills. In partnership with NHM Meghalaya and Global Newborn Solutions, this innovation is helping frontline health workers provide safer care for premature and low-birth-weight babies.

Meanwhile, in Sohiong, the Farmers’ Hub is enabling farmers with access to seeds, tools, and fairer markets—reducing costs, boosting productivity, and strengthening local livelihoods.

Step by step, communities are creating solutions that inspire change.

These updates remind us that step by step, communities are finding solutions that make a difference.

Join us. Support comes in many forms: skills, time, or funding. Together we can co-create happiness and opportunities for all.

With hope and action,

Building Strong Foundations for Learning in East Garo Hills

The Foundational Learning Improvement Programme (FLIP), launched by Smart Village Movement in partnership with Madhi Foundation, is transforming education in East Garo Hills by strengthening Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN) among early-grade learners.

Recent teacher training sessions, along with the distribution of Term 2 books and workbooks, have enabled schools to actively integrate new methods. Regular classroom observations highlight improved fluency, writing, and numeracy skills among students. FLIP is building stronger learning foundations for children’s brighter futures. Read more..

Covering 100 schools, the program equips teachers with innovative strategies, training, and structured materials to make classrooms more engaging and effective.

STEM Fusion 2025: Igniting Young Minds in Shillong

STEM Fusion 2025, held at the State Convention Centre, Shillong, brought together over 400 students and 80 teachers to showcase 95 innovative projects addressing real-world challenges.

Organized by NECTAR in collaboration with Smart Village Movement (SVM) and IISER Pune, the event highlighted the importance of STEM education in shaping Meghalaya’s future.

Competition winners across three categories, school to postgraduate, received prizes totaling ₹2 lakh for first place to ₹10,000 consolation awards.

Expert sessions from IISER Pune, NIT Trichy, Curiosity Gym, and drone innovators enriched participants, making STEM Fusion 2025 a landmark step in nurturing future problem-solvers. Read more..

Honourable Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Shri Conrad K. Sangma, attended as the Chief Guest and lauded the young participants:

“This initiative is a commendable effort to foster innovation and a healthy spirit of competition among students. We must create more opportunities for our students to explore and excel in science and technology.

I would like to see mandatory visits to the NECTAR Lab so that every student gets exposure to innovation at an early age. Along with this, we must work towards setting up more STEM labs like NECTAR across the state.”

Honourable Chief Minister Shri Conrad K. Sangma, the Chief Guest, praised the young innovators and emphasized creating more opportunities, district-level competitions, STEM labs, and a “Lab on Wheels” for rural outreach.

Leaders including Dr. Arun Kumar Sarma (NECTAR) and Shri Sampath Kumar, IAS, underlined the potential of SVM’s Triple Helix Model to link innovations with local solutions.

Dream Warmer™ Expands to Jowai: Advancing Newborn Care in Meghalaya

To strengthen newborn care in Meghalaya, the Smart Village Movement (SVM) launched the first pilot of the Dream Warmer™ in Mawkyrwat, South West Khasi Hills District, in collaboration with the National Health Mission (NHM) Meghalaya and Global Newborn Solutions. This simple yet powerful innovation enables frontline healthcare workers to provide safe, at-home care for premature and low-birth-weight babies. It can be used in conjunction with Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC).

In Meghalaya’s remote and hilly regions, hypothermia remains one of the silent threats to newborn survival. The Dream Warmer™ provides a practical, non-electric, reusable solution that helps babies stay warm and safe even in resource-constrained settings.

On August 29, 2025, the Dream Warmer™ initiative reached another milestone with the official handover of four kits to Jowai Maternal and Child Health Hospital in West Jaintia Hills District for experimenting its effectiveness in transport of sick newborns to a higher health facility. Read more..
