SVM Monthly Newsletter – April-May 2026

Dear Friends,

The past few months have been filled with meaningful milestones and inspiring stories of impact across the communities we serve.

From the success of SVM’s inaugural Gala in California, which brought together supporters committed to advancing healthcare and education, to the launch of the Rural Integrated Community Development Program in Meghalaya, we continue to see the power of collaboration driving positive change. This edition also highlights the journey of a young leader from Meghalaya through the Aspire Leadership Program and the remarkable efforts of women artisans in Shillong who are transforming plastic waste into sustainable livelihood opportunities.

Across every initiative, our focus remains the same: empowering communities through better access to education, healthcare, livelihoods, and opportunities for growth. These stories reflect not only the progress being made on the ground but also the dedication of the partners, volunteers, donors, and community members who make this work possible.

Thank you for being part of this journey. Your support continues to help create lasting change and brighter futures for rural communities across India.

Warm regards,

SVM Team & Trustees

Aspire Leadership Program: A Global Learning Journey

Kelly Synrem, a Master’s student at NEHU and participant in Aspire Leadership Program Cohort 1, 2026 shared how the program has expanded her perspective on leadership, service, and global responsibility. Through leadership courses led by Harvard faculty, masterclasses from world-class educators, and interactions with young leaders from around the world, Kelly developed greater confidence, resilience, and a deeper commitment to creating positive change in her community.

She credits the program with equipping her with valuable skills, knowledge, and a global network to continue her leadership journey. Kelly noted that the experience has empowered her to embrace challenges with confidence, think more inclusively, and lead with integrity as she works toward making a meaningful impact in society.

Women Artisans Turn Plastic Waste into Opportunity

Twenty-three women artisans in Shillong are learning to transform plastic waste into fabric through the North East’s first plastic waste upcycling initiative.

It is implemented by EHF Development Foundation with on-ground support from Smart Village Movement. The project combines environmental sustainability with livelihood creation.

Since its launch in February 2026, artisans have been trained in upcycling techniques and are progressing toward creating market-ready products.

By converting discarded plastic into useful products, the initiative is not only reducing waste but also creating new economic opportunities for women, positioning them as ambassadors for environmental awareness and sustainable development within their communities.

A Milestone Evening: SVM Gala 2026

Smart Village Movement’s inaugural Annual Gala, held on May 31, 2026, in Orange, California, was an extraordinary evening that brought together community leaders, philanthropists, healthcare professionals, educators, and supporters in celebration of nearly a decade of impact across rural India. The event reflected a powerful collective commitment to advancing healthcare, education, and community development initiatives that create lasting change in underserved communities.

Guests heard inspiring messages from Dr. Anil Shah, Anna Fitter, keynote speaker Manu Shah, and Ambassador Dr. K. J. Srinivasa, Consul General of India in Los Angeles.

The evening highlighted SVM’s transformative work in healthcare, STEM education, livelihoods, and sustainability, including the vision for the Vatrak Cardiac, Vascular and Cancer Hospital and the development of an affordable diabetes monitoring and insulin delivery system for children with Type 1 Diabetes.

We are deeply grateful to every donor, sponsor, volunteer, and supporter whose dedication and generosity made this milestone event possible. Together, we continue to strengthen rural communities and build a healthier, more empowered future.

Students explore the future of technology on National Technology Day

The Smart Village Movement, in collaboration with North East Centre for Technology Application and Reach (NECTAR) and the Education Department, Science Cell, Government of Meghalaya, brought together students and teachers from across the state for a hands-on exploration of science and technology on the occasion of National Technology Day on May 11.

The programme was held at NECTAR STEM Lab, Shillong on May 11, under this year’s national theme, Responsible Innovation for Inclusive Growth.

A total of 35 students and 35 teachers from across the state participated.

Participants engaged with a wide range of activities covering robotics, including interactive robots and servo-ultrasonic systems, electronics through a working house model, DIY STEM projects such as an e-bike and an electric buzzer game, and an introduction to basic drone technology. The activities sparked curiosity in students and teachers, who participated in demonstrations to learn and explore the importance of science and technology.

The collaboration between Smart Village Movement and NECTAR reflects a shared purpose of bringing meaningful technology exposure to communities and institutions that stand to benefit most from it, particularly across the North East region.

Rural Integrated Community Development Program launched in Meghalaya

The Rural Integrated Community Development (RICD) Program was inaugurated on May 27, 2026, in Pynursla, East Khasi Hills, Meghalaya, by Deputy Chief Minister Shri Prestone Tynsong. Implemented by Apollo Foundation – Total Health and supported by Altius Telecom Infrastructure Trust, the initiative aims to strengthen education, healthcare, WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene), and renewable energy access across 10 villages.

The program has already reached 647 students across 10 schools, benefiting over 4,000 community members through improved learning environments, smart classrooms, clean drinking water, sanitation facilities, and teacher training. In healthcare, the initiative is strengthening services across 2 Primary Health Centres and 2 Sub-Centres, improving access to quality care for nearly 48,000 people.

Smart Village Movement is supporting the program through community engagement and monitoring, helping ensure that implementation remains community-driven, impactful, and responsive to local needs.
