The Plastic Waste Upcycling & Artisan Livelihood Project officially kicked off with 17 artisans starting their training on February 12, 2026.
From discarded plastic to dignified work this is where sustainability meets livelihood. The six-month pilot is designed to move towards a self-sustaining livelihood model.
Through intensive, trainer-led sessions, artisans will learn the technical process of converting plastic waste into fabric.
Phase 1 lays the foundation for creating market-ready products that support both the planet and livelihood.
As of March 5, the Plastic Waste Upcycling & Artisan Livelihood Project is well underway and the artisans have shown so much improvement. Plastic waste is being collected, prepared, and carefully cut into strips before being set onto the loom, where each thread becomes part of a larger story of transformation and renewal. Through intensive, trainer-led sessions and hands-on practice, they are actively developing the skills to convert plastic waste into fabric. Patience and collaboration is one of the key principles of the weaving process.
Beyond the product itself, this project reflects the power of community and craftsmanship in reimagining waste as a resource which is creating livelihood opportunities while contributing to environmental sustainability.
This initiative is one of many efforts under the Smart Village Movement dedicated to building sustainable, community-driven solutions.
