A Little Warmth, More Confidence: A Mother’s Experience with the Dream Warmer™

Smart Village Movement, October 23, 2026

Keeping newborns warm is an essential part of their care, particularly for babies born prematurely or with low birth weight. In rural areas where access to electricity may be limited, practical solutions can help families care for their newborns at home.

Spearheaded by Smart Village Movement in collaboration with Global Newborn Solutions and the National Health Mission (NHM), Government of Meghalaya, the Dream Warmer™ pilot was launched in Mawkyrwat Block. The reusable, electricity-free warmer uses plant-based wax to keep babies warm for up to six hours and is designed to complement Kangaroo Mother Care.

Keeping a Baby Warm at Home

A 33-year-old mother in South West Khasi Hills District, has been using the Dream Warmer™ for over a month to care for her baby, who was born prematurely.

With follow-up support from the local Auxiliary Nurse Midwife (ANM) and Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) , she has learned to use the warmer confidently. She shared that it helps keep her baby warm while sleeping and allows her to manage household tasks without having to carry the baby all the time.

“It helps to keep the baby warm and it has helped a lot,” she shared.

Supporting Mothers Through Frontline Care

Her experience highlights the value of combining practical innovations with guidance from frontline health workers. Through this pilot, Smart Village Movement and its partners are exploring ways to support families caring for premature and low-birth-weight babies at home.
