From the “Dialogue with Director” set
In this episode, we heard from Nialty Mary Rani, a beacon of inspiration and resilience. Despite grappling with significant challenges, including health issues and the need to discontinue her education, she has displayed extraordinary determination.
Ms. Rani shared her journey, from early schooling in her village and Shillong to facing family and health struggles, which led to her dropping out after class 8. Despite these obstacles, she learned English independently, supported her family during the pandemic, and eventually discovered her passion for cooking and entrepreneurship. Her entrepreneurial journey began with making ice cream and later transitioned to making organic jam. Her hard work and dedication helped her start a small business and earned her a grant to support it. She continues to expand her knowledge and skills through training and self-learning.
Ms. Rani’s journey is a testament to the indomitable human spirit and the transformative power of alternative education and entrepreneurship. Her story, a product of a small initiative of the Smart Village Movement and other organizations that has now blossomed with government support, is changing lives, including Nialty’s. Through the Smart Village Movement pilot and the idea of an Alternative Learning Lab, Nialty, who could not finish school, could explore other interests, learn new skills, and thrive as an entrepreneur. This initiative has allowed her to transform her life and pursue her passion.

The importance of this initiative cannot be overstated. By offering opportunities to many such youths, Smart Village Movement is creating a pathway for those who have faced setbacks in traditional education systems to still achieve their dreams. It gives them the necessary tools, skills, and support to become self-sufficient and contribute positively to their communities. Nialty’s story is a powerful reminder that setbacks should never discourage us but instead ignite a new perspective and determination to leave our mark.
