Mawngap School Celebrates its First STEM Exhibition

Smart Village Movement, September 20, 2024

Smart Village Movement (SVM) proudly marked a significant milestone on 19th September 2024 with the first STEM Innovation Hub Exhibition at Mawngap District Christian Multipurpose Higher Secondary School in Shillong, Meghalaya. This event celebrates one year of successful program operations, made possible through the generous contributions of SVM’s kind donors and immense training by our knowledge partner Curiosity Gym.

Program was attended by Chief Guest, Swapnil Tembe, State Project Director of Samagra Shiksha and Director of School Education and Literacy, Meghalaya and many other school teachers and students, the exhibition featured a tour showcasing a wide array of STEM projects created by students. Alongside these, skill development demonstrations provided an inspiring display of the innovative, curiosity-driven learning that has been cultivated through the program.

During his keynote address, Mr. Swapnil Tembe emphasized the importance of fostering curiosity in students. He highlighted the fact that out of Meghalaya’s 15,000 schools, only two currently house STEM INNOVATION HUBS—specialized spaces dedicated to exploration and hands-on learning. He urged students to take full advantage of such facilities, which align with the National Education Policy (NEP)’s vision for Bal Chetna Kendras, spaces designed to nurture curiosity and innovation in education.

Mr. Swapnil Tembe also suggested that expanding curiosity-driven programs like these, including the development of a STEM Innovation Hub at the Science Centre at NEHU, could further inspire students to explore science. He stressed that while science is a crucial field, applied science—using knowledge to solve real-world problems—is even more critical. For instance, rainwater harvesting, despite Meghalaya’s high rainfall, could be a vital solution to the state’s water shortages. By applying scientific principles, students can lead practical solutions to address pressing issues in their communities.

Mr. Swapnil Tembe encouraged students to explore national programs like the Inspire MANAK initiative and science exhibitions, which offer scholarships and international opportunities. He noted that such programs could unlock new paths for students and inspire broader participation in science education in the state.

This exhibition is part of SVM’s long-term commitment to ensuring that students in rural areas have access to modern, high-quality STEM education, creating pathways for skill development and innovation. With the support of Curiosity Gym and contributions from SVM donors, the program equips students with 21st-century skills, broadens their horizons, and prepares them to solve real-world challenges.
