Smart Village Movement (SVM) is excited to announce its collaboration with the Global Network for Zero (GNFZ) to pursue net zero certification for EcoNest, an innovative eco-tourism cottage in the picturesque state of Meghalaya, Northeast India. This partnership underscores a pioneering commitment to sustainability, aiming to set new benchmarks in carbon footprint reduction and eco-tourism.
EcoNest represents a fusion of technology, entrepreneurship, and natural resources. This collaboration between SVM, Meghalaya Tourism, Meghalaya Tourism Development Corporation, and Shillong Bamboo Pvt Ltd demonstrates the responsible use of local renewable materials and skills, establishing a model for sustainable tourism infrastructure.
GNFZ, the world’s leading independent net zero certification body, will guide SVM through a detailed certification process. This includes an emissions inventory to calculate Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions, followed by creating a net zero implementation plan with incremental milestones towards full certification.

EcoNest, housed within the historic Pine Wood Hotels of Meghalaya, embodies sustainable construction using SAF Board technology from Asan Building Systems, transforming agricultural waste into durable building materials. The project integrates bamboo sourced from Shillong Bamboo, blending traditional craftsmanship with modern design to enhance sustainability and aesthetics. Future iterations of EcoNest will include solar-powered options. The Smart Village Movement introduced the Econest model in the state’s tourism sector to meet the rising demand for accommodation. The government aims to establish 5,000 rooms by 2025, advancing sustainability and eco-tourism through eco-friendly materials and designs. Additionally, in partnership with Shillong Bamboo, a local construction firm, Smart Village Movement promotes local industries and livelihoods by incorporating bamboo into interior decor and furniture.
